01 /Does a staircase need a railing

The "Add a railing" option determines whether the staircase will have a handrail. In most cases a railing is necessary: it protects against falling from the open side of a flight or landing.

  • An open edge of a flight or landing — a railing is mandatory.
  • There are children or elderly people at home — a railing is advisable even on short flights.
  • If the staircase adjoins a wall on both sides, a single wall-mounted handrail is sometimes enough.
