Stair angle

Stair angle

Determines the steepness of the flight, affecting comfort, safety and floor space. The comfortable range for a home is 30°–40°.

01 /Classification of incline angles

The stair angle determines its steepness and directly affects comfort, safety and the amount of floor space it takes up. The most comfortable range for living spaces is 30° to 40°.

  • 🛌 30°–35°. Gentle and the safest stairs. Ideal for the elderly and small children. Require a lot of floor space.
  • 🏡 36°–40°. The gold standard for a private house. The optimal balance between walking comfort and space saving.
  • 📐 41°–45°. Steep designs. Permitted when space is scarce. Descending such a staircase requires extra caution.
  • 🪜 Above 45°. Auxiliary stairs (attic, basement, "alternating tread"). They can be descended safely only backwards.

02 /How to find the angle

To calculate the angle, measure two parameters:

  • The height from the first-storey floor to the second-storey floor.
  • The length of the staircase's projection on the floor (how much space is allocated for the flight).

Floor run length

The horizontal distance from the first step to the end of the staircase under the ceiling. Determines whether the flight will fit.

Stringer length

The full length of the inclined load-bearing beam (stringer or string) that the steps rest on. The hypotenuse of the "height–run" triangle.

Headroom

The minimum vertical distance from the step edge to the ceiling or the flight above. The norm is at least 200 cm.
