Which wood a staircase is made of. Oak and ash are the strongest, pine is the most affordable.

01 /Wood species characteristics

The choice of wood determines how long the structure lasts. Oak and ash are the strongest species, while pine is the most affordable.

  • 🪵 Pine. Lowest cost and easy to work, but the wood is soft, scratches easily and can release resin.
  • 🌳 Birch. Harder than pine, affordable, with an even texture; tints easily but is sensitive to moisture.
  • 🌲 Larch. Moisture-resistant and strong, does not rot, with a beautiful grain — ideal for outdoor stairs, but hard to work.
  • 🪵 Beech. High density and even colour, but absorbs moisture heavily and is prone to warping — for dry rooms only.
  • 👑 Oak. Maximum durability, wear resistance and a noble grain at a high price — the optimal choice for a home.
  • ✨ Ash. High hardness, elasticity, impact resistance and a contrasting grain; on par with oak in price and quality.

02 /Matching species to parts

Species are matched to parts according to wear. For steps and handrails — the parts subject to the most wear — the hardest species are chosen: oak and ash.
